THE WAY TO THE FATHER

There are times when I’m riding with my sister to a place on a route she is somewhat familiar with but not totally. So, she puts the address into google maps on her phone, and it fills in the gaps. Sometimes the gaps aren’t what she expects and suddenly I hear her questioning the device, “Where are you taking me? That’s not the way I wanted to go.” The one-sided conversation continues as she’s putting in more information in order to get her desired route. The device finally succumbs to her wishes. But until then, the conversation is quite entertaining to me.
In our earthly journey with all the different ways to get from here to there, it’s easy to follow a wrong or undesired path. Unfortunately, on our spiritual journey it’s sometimes just as easy to do the same. Different religious denominations have different doctrines, beliefs, bylaws, and customs; all with the sole purpose of serving the Most High God. I would be less than honest if I did not admit that I do not understand the differences in the many churches. If we all read the same bible (and I understand that there are variations), we should all realize that there is only one way to the Father. John 14:6 states it clearly, spoken by Jesus Himself. “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
Mapping Our Way
To further understand the depth of John 14:6, it is essential to analyze the three profound declarations made by Jesus in this verse.
First, Jesus declares, “I am the way.” This signifies that Jesus is the path to salvation and reconciliation with God. He guides us on our spiritual journey, much like a map that leads us to our destination. By following His teachings, we can navigate through life's challenges and uncertainties, ensuring we stay on the right path.
Second, Jesus says, “I am the truth.” This means that Jesus embodies the ultimate truth about God, humanity, and the universe. In a world filled with conflicting beliefs and philosophies, Jesus stands as the definitive source of truth. By embracing His words and life, we gain a clear and accurate understanding of divine wisdom and purpose.
Third, Jesus proclaims, “I am the life.” This highlights that Jesus is the source of both physical and spiritual life. Through His death and resurrection, He offers us eternal life and a restored relationship with God.
A Straight and Narrow Path
John 14:6 emphasizes that no one can come to the Father except through Jesus. This exclusive claim underscores the importance of faith in Christ as the only means of attaining salvation and eternal life. It calls us to trust in His guidance, embrace His truth, and receive the life He offers. In doing so, we are assured of our place in the Father's presence, both now and forever. This is reiterated in Matthew 7:13 which says, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat.”
In Matthew 7:13 Jesus uses a powerful metaphor to illustrate the choices we have in life and the consequences of those choices. The "strait gate" symbolizes the path of righteousness, faith, and discipline. It is described as narrow because it requires commitment, sacrifice, and adherence to the teachings of Jesus. This path is not easy, and few choose it, but it leads to eternal life and a deep, fulfilling relationship with God.
A Path of Deceit
On the other hand, the "wide gate" and "broad way" represent the easy, popular path that many follow. This path is characterized by a lack of true commitment to God, indulgence in worldly desires, and disregard for spiritual discipline. It is broad because it accommodates a wide range of beliefs and lifestyles that are contrary to God's will. Although it may seem attractive and effortless, it ultimately leads to destruction and separation from God.
Jesus Is The Way
Jesus' message in this verse is a call to choose the narrow path despite its challenges. He emphasizes the importance of making deliberate, conscious decisions to follow Him and live according to His teachings. By doing so, we avoid the pitfalls of the broad way and secure our place in the eternal kingdom of God. By accepting Jesus into our hearts, we experience a transformation that leads to a fulfilling and purposeful life. We walk the only road that leads to the Father. Jesus is The Way.
