The Still Small Voice of God

Life is complicated and sometimes downright confusing. It leads us to seek the advice of others who may be more knowledgeable in the types of situations we’re going through. There are even people who charge us significantly for this knowledge. However, when God designed us, He was well aware of every situation we might encounter, thereby providing us with the tools we need to fix them: 1- His Son Jesus Christ who sits at His right-hand interceding on our behalf, 2- indwelling the Holy Spirit within us as a direct communication line to Him, and 3- giving us the ability to hear and recognize His ‘still small voice’ (1 Kings 19:12) when He speaks to us. This voice can only be heard through spiritual ears. Spiritual ears must be purposely tuned to hear it.
Developing Spiritual Ears
Matthew 11:15 is a red text scripture, which simply means that Jesus Himself, is speaking. He says here, “He who hath ears to hear, let him hear.” I find it strange that He said, ‘ears to hear’. Afterall, isn’t ‘hearing’ what ears are designed to do? Seeing this, however, makes me realize that this scripture goes deeper than the presumed surface. So, what then lies in the depths of this simple passage?--- A call from Jesus urging His followers to pay close attention and to truly understand the spiritual truths He is conveying. It signifies more than just the physical act of hearing. It is an invitation to perceive and internalize the deeper meanings and divine revelations enclosed in His teachings.
Jesus expressly invites His followers to ‘hear Him’ because He desires us all to become spiritually attuned and receptive to God’s messages. It calls for an active, engaged form of listening that goes beyond superficial hearing. Such listening requires humility, soul-searching, and readiness to act upon the received wisdom. This scripture underscores the importance of not just hearing the word of God, but also living it, integrating it into one’s life, and allowing it to transform one’s thoughts and actions. This is the foundation for developing spiritual ears. For if Jesus is not heard and obeyed by us, God will not be heard and obeyed by us.
Recognizing God's Voice
In this nine-word scripture, Jesus is emphasizing the necessity of spiritual awareness and responsiveness. To have ‘ears to hear’ is to be open to divine guidance, to seek understanding earnestly, and be willing to embrace and embody the teachings of Christ in daily life. After submission to Jesus transforms our hearts and minds into a more submissive state, Christians can then attune themselves to God's still small voice. Being more willing to hear and obey, provides the pathway for God’s guidance in our lives. The more we adhere to His guidance, the more freely He extends it to us, causing us to live a more stress free and less confused life.
In a world that’s hustling and bustling and screaming all around us, it may prove difficult to hear God. The most important thing to remember is that God is not in the hustle and bustle and He certainly doesn't scream at us. 1Kings 19: 11-12 explains how God passed by, and a strong wind destroyed the mountains, but God was not in the wind. After the wind, an earthquake, but God was not in the earthquake and finally a fire that God also was not in. But after all that, a still small voice spoke to Elijah. Learn to step away from whatever is screaming at you and listen for the ‘still small voice’ that quietly beckons you. The true comprehension of spiritual matters demands more than just passive reception. It requires an active and deliberate effort to understand and apply Jesus’ teachings to our daily lives. Thus, “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear” is a profound call to all believers to cultivate a deep, receptive, and responsive relationship with God’s word, ensuring that our hearts and minds are aligned with His divine will.
