Jesus is the Light of the world
Jesus is the Light of the world

“Run to the light Carol Anne!” Do you remember this famous line from the movie Poltergeist where a mother is instructed to encourage her child to go to the light? The mother was reluctant to do so, not knowing exactly what was awaiting the child. But she finally followed her instructions, and the child was delivered from the demons. Yes, this is a movie. However, it is a very good illustration of a well-known bible scripture that most of us are familiar with, John 8: 12.

John 8:12- Then spake Jesus unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

John 8:12 is a significant verse where Jesus reveals Himself as the "light of the world." This illustrates that Jesus brings spiritual illumination and guidance to those who follow Him. He promises that His followers will not walk in darkness, symbolizing ignorance, sin, and despair. Instead, they will possess the light of life, which means clarity, truth, and eternal hope. Essentially, Jesus is offering a pathway to enlightenment and salvation

through faith in Him.

Let There Be Light

During the creation, God said “let there be light; and there was light. And God saw the light that it was good.” (Genesis 1:3-4) God created light before he separated the firmament, before He separated land from waters and before He separated heaven from earth. Writing this blog has caused me to wonder why it was so important to God that light illuminates the earth before anything else. I believe it is because He wanted us to see clearly from the very beginning the good things He has put before us for our earthly enjoyment and happiness. Of course, there was a slight detour due to man’s disobedience. But it is so wonderful to know that God’s plan doesn’t change because of a detour. He still wants us to be happy. He still wants us to enjoy life. But more importantly, He still wants us to be saved and close to Him. This is why He gave us a new Light, Jesus.

Jesus straight-forwardly lets us know that He is "Light of the world," using a powerful metaphor to convey His role and mission. The term "light" in biblical context often symbolizes purity, truth, and divine revelation. By proclaiming Himself as the light, Jesus is asserting His divine nature and His ability to illuminate the spiritual path for humanity.

Follow The Light

The phrase in the scripture "he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness" indicates that those who choose to follow Jesus will be guided away from moral and spiritual ignorance. Darkness represents everything that separates us from God: sin, despair, confusion, and death. Jesus offers an alternative to this plight by providing guidance and clarity, leading His followers towards righteousness and eternal life.

The promise "shall have the light of life" signifies that followers of Jesus will receive spiritual enlightenment and vitality. This "Light of life" encompasses understanding of divine truths, inner peace, and hope for eternal salvation. Essentially, Jesus is inviting people to embrace His teachings and find a pathway to spiritual fulfillment and salvation.

This scripture thus underscores the transformative power of faith in Jesus. It encourages believers to seek His guidance, promising that through Him, they will find clarity, peace, joy, purpose, and ultimately, eternal life.
